Majority 'do not exercise enough'

Nearly two thirds of UK adults risk their health through insufficient exercise, a survey shows.
The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy polled 2,084 adults, and found 63% admitted to not taking enough exercise.
Lack of exercise and unhealthy living has been linked to greater risk of life threatening illnesses such as cancer, heart disease and stroke.
However, 20% of those questioned said they exercised only once a month or less.

Walking

Most of us walk at some point each day but we do it far less than we used to – the government calculates there's been a decline of more than 20 per cent in the number of miles walked since the mid-1980s.

But walking's the simplest and cheapest of all exercises, and making it a regular activity and focusing on the intensity or distance covered can greatly increase your fitness.

Walking improves the condition of your heart and lungs (cardiovascular fitness) and works the muscles of the lower body. It's a weight-bearing activity, so it may improve bone density, yet it's also low impact, putting less stress on the joints than some other forms of exercise.

That's why they are so fat...I don't understand, even if you are in shortage of time, don't they have at least 15 minutes for some light exercises or running outdoors? That's called laziness not a shortage of time...

It's their problem, if they don't exercise they will become fat, if they become fat they will get ill, and then they will have to pay money for the medicines against their illnesses. That's very simple.

A couple of explanatory points ;-)

It's true that a majority of people do not exercise enough, but a short walk will not burn off all that fat :-) I know people with a punishing exercise regime who are still overweight. We are fat because of what we eat too.

Second, there's an element of snobbery with regard to walking. Every time I walk anywhere, people keep offering me lifts in their cars, and then treat me like I'm mad when I refuse! :banghead Honestly, some employers will hold it against you! And a lot of the obese women I know will claim that women must not walk outside because of "personal safety" (i.e. you'll get kidnapped or raped) :roll: . Outside the big cities, people are very attached to their cars. It's changing a bit - there was a fashion in pedometers, and sales of bicycles have increased with the recession ;-)

Third, people do not have to pay money for medicine - we have the National Health Service which most people still use. OK, you might have to pay some prescription charges... A lot of people seem to be in denial about the fact that obesity will make you ill. Then the heart conditions, arthritus and blood pressure pills are seen as part of growing old. There are plenty of older people on blood pressure and heart tablets for the rest of their lives, and increasing numbers of people on insulin for type 2 diabetes.

Now, I support the NHS - I owe my life to it - but it has caused some people to become complacent regarding their health. They only see the medication that they are entitled to -they don't see that they are taking funds away from people who need it. :nonnon

One of the measures that the government suggested a couple of years ago was that obese patients sign a contract with their doctor. This contract comitts them to lose weight (with the doctor's help) - if they don't try to lose some weight, they will not be entitled to medical treatment. This was not a popular proposal :lol: But I do think that if people saw how much their pills and operations cost, they might see how priviledged they are.

I'm shocked, why people don't take care of themselves. If they see they are getting fat, why not to change their meals and their regime? They are waiting until this turns to a much serious problem.

they are not doing sports because they are fat and lazy! after work instead to go for a walk they have diner and go for sleep! prefer fast foods! others have forgotten cooking and some may never have known! loved Brits standup your butts on chairs and go at the gym

I dare you to take your next holiday in the UK, and say that to some fat people! :haha

Honestly, I have spent many years trying to convert friends and family... They think I am the one with an "exercise fixation" or an "eating disorder" :roll:

Besides, a thin person might maintain their weight by doing a little walking or cutting out junk food. But once you have become fat, it is VERY difficult to lose it - especially if you don't know much about nutrition or exercise. You wouldn't beleive how many times I have tried to lose weight and actually put weight on! I have exercised to the extent that I was too exhausted to work or socialise, and I have made myself ill with foods that claim to be healthy :oO You will have to fight your body for the rest of your life Cry

(If I sound a little depressed on this forum, it is because I'm hungry and my legs hurt :-P )

Of course I agree that people should look after their health Confuseduper But it is not always so easy, and we live in a society that encourages you to make these excuses...

Yes it's hard to lose and maintain weight but people know this, yet they allow to become overweight. They understand they need to weaken and still find a thousand reasons not to go to the gym, do not hold that diets cause are ineffective. And I know how are this martyrdom, but for me is more valuable health than all taste food from world.

In my experience, people become overweight as children (which is the fault of the parents and schools), or due to various life events where little exercise and overeating are expected (e.g. going to university, becoming pregnant, becoming ill or breaking a leg, taking a challenging job where you might be expected to have lunch with clients, etc)

So, let's be constructive about this Smile I guess all of you come from countries that do not have an obesity crisis. Why is that? :quoi What do you feed your children? How do your children get to school without being kidnapped? What proportion of people go to University, and what is their environment like? How do women cope with preganancy? Where do you go for food if you get hungry while you're away from the house? How do you fit exercise around a challenging day at work? What do your mothers think when you walk instead of driving? What does your boss think when you arrive at work wet and muddy from walking?!

so many questions ... for children the parents a guilty,but when they grow up they begin to understand what is right and what is not. Already by own can decide what is good for eating. About the rest they are laggard.

I think what annoys me about this thread is the assumption that insufficient exercise makes you fat. The implication is then that doing exercise will make you thin. This assumption is dangerously incorrect. It is insulting to overweight people who exercise. It has also given rise to "Exercise Bulimia" (where people become trapped in a cycle of binge eating and excessive exercise).

If an obese person does Terry's 15 minutes walking every day, would you call them lazy? ;-) Many obese people do much more exercise than that!

However, I read this report today, and it shocked even me! What is worrying is that the younger generation are obviously being set a bad example, and are not being educated. What I am trying to say is that the problem is not a few "laggards" - laziness is becoming part of our culture, and that is much more difficult to fight :nonnon

The survey did offer some hope with almost three out of 10 (28%) of respondents saying they would be prepared to step up their fitness regime if they felt it would make them more attractive to their partner.

I tend to believe that the theme about laziness it is based not only on exercise!I believe that laziness is in the difficulty to prepare and eat a healthy food, and not necessarily the laziness to make sport. Because if you do sports and eat as for two ,do not really help, but worse, because making sport grow appetite and you tend to eat more

Indeed, as in this proverb .. We must not relax fully never. Should not forget that we are what we eat and look like we take care of us. More care will not damage while less certainly will do.

I agree with it. I try to run every day. And if something happens and i can't run, after 3-4 days it is more difficult to go info running 8-)

I for e.g can not do the same thing a long time, I mean sports, bore me. Need to change atmosphere, because I become bored and lazy.

laziness is a serious decease of our generation. Many people want to amuse only. But I think that it is not so hard to do some exercises every day or to walk for half an hour. Many peole can't live without cars, almost all home work is done with the help of mechanics, such as dishwasher, washing machine... We made our live comfortable but we forgot about our health.

Since the computer appeared people less and less time spend exercising, I even don't know there are still some people doing that? Because it is more interesting to play a game on the computer then to do some exercise, but it is not normal. We should be more active in our life, it is the key for good heath.

I used to be so lazy when it comes to exercising.
I'd rather sit on the sofa the whole day and watch TV,
or stay in front of my laptop, or sleep!
But, as I got older, I realized that I should get my body moving!
Then, I started to play badminton, which I still do up until now.
Then once in a while, I do jogging in the morning.
It'll be better if you're with a friend so it'll be much more fun and both of you can motivate each other. Smile

Most people this days have forsaken exercise an turned to other method of reducing fat in the body, but this is inputting your life to a very risky position. If everybody was to take fifteen minutes everyday and exercise we can reduce the rate of people going to hospitals.
