The Mediterranean Union, established by Nicolas Sarkozy
#1
The proposal to establish the Mediterranean Union was given by Nicolas Sarkozy, during his election campaign. It was founded on July 13, 2008. The union includes all the EU states and some non-EU states from the Mediterranean region. This union offered the Muslim world (especially for Turkey) to feel being a part of the European family. Its goal is to end the conflicts in the Middle East (Israel particularly). There are beliefs that the union's purpose is totally another from what is said.
What do you think about this union?

It is the first time I hear about this. Are you sure about it?

Didn't you know about the Mediterranean Union? If you live in Germany it's more than impossible not to hear about it.
What is really behind this union? Sarkozy simply wants to establish good relations with countries that have enough gas resources.

So this is more likely a Sarkozy Union.

actually yes, or maybe even a "French Union", that is because the main interests are held by France. Of course other states receive little facilities but it doesn't compare to what France gets - cheaper gas.

This union made the Islam world closer to the European one. Remember that, Spain, Italy, France fight against illegal migration. But this union seems to help them doing it easier. So maybe the purpose was a total integration with the Islam world?

For those who haven't heard of this union, please visit this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediterranean_Union

You should be aware about it, since these are things of general culture.

What is really interesting is that Libya did not join the Union. France would thereby have a partner full of resources. But, Libya didn't join probably because of its conflicts with Israel.

i am not crazy on the idea i have to say...i fear that they will eventualy plan to allow all those states to have somewhat of EU membership....others say that it is just to bring peace in the region...others, to stick turkey in it and never allow it into EU...a bit messy and grey the issue...so i am not not very supportive...i will watch the space and see where it goes..... :?

Chris, agree with you. I think there should be a clear border between what we call European and the rest of the world. Otherwise, the EU will lose its specific feature. It's dangerous to act unreasonable by allowing any country be closer to EU, even by establishing other unions. If it keeps going on, Europeans will merge into the rest of the world.

An article I have read tells that Germany considers the Mediterranean Union to be threat for the EU.
Angela Merkel considers that if the given union develops, it might bring to further break down of the EU.
In turn, Spain backs the initiative of the French president.
If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is "God is crying." And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is "Probably because of something you did."

When Sarkozy came to power I didn't expect much - but I must say - I have been positively surprised
how well he has done. Mediterranean Union is once again a great idea - when EU is not willing to
grant membership to those countries - the next best thing to do is to get them have their own union.
EU can co-operate with mediterranean union and later - when areas are more equal, unions can join
together. It is much more effective way than negotiating and giving every one a individual EU-joining
plan.

I don't think it's a good idea. If countries joins the EU one by one, with no haste, it becomes much easier to assess the country's situation. If the EU joins another Union, it will be impossible to make the Europeans minds realized that "don't worry, be happy, another 10 states have joined us at once"!

I meant it a little differently - I think two unions could join only if they really shares same values and
interest. On the other hand single countries can make their decision basing only for economical benefits.
A good example is Island - for economical reasons it just now don't have much more choices than
joining EU - even they really don't want it.

The thing is that i've seen nothing done for peace by all this Unions!!! they can't solve the problems they just are just trying to oppress on some countries politics... Sarkozy is the worst president of France during the existance of this country and worst politician.. (I'm not talking about him as a diplomat coz he doesn't has any kind of diplomatic talant at all, while franch ppl were one of the greatest diplomats over the lifetime:Louis XI, Richelie, Hanry IV, Taleyran, George Clemenceau...)

You see historically most conflicts are conflicts of economical interests. True, Unions are not very capable
to solve existing or historical problems - but they surely help to avoid new ones to occur.
