Needless to say, it wasn't the only implication - things like aid and support from the US, beginning of the standoff against communism and simple economic interests were also important. The ECSC was designed according to an earlier union between the Benelux countries, which achieved considerable success. There never was a clearly defined unitary purpose of the Union, and it's probable there never will be. A European superstate is by far not a necessary endpoint. But there probably will be further integration - so far as it will beneficial economically and geopolitically. It's important to remember that these two things, economics and politics, are paramount when talking of European integration. Idealistic notions such as federalism and/or nationalism should be set aside as merely accessory forces.
If you are writing something, be sure to include a quote from the preamble of the EU Treaty, regarding an "ever-closer union". Interpretations of this can be the key to what the EU is about. Also you can take a look at the 3 article of the same treaty (that one's mostly hogwash though).
