The secrets of personal success

The secrets of personal success

Presently, when business requires you to do more and more things and life becomes more hectic, you tend to do everything faster. But if you are not cautious enough, in pursuing this, your mind may be invaded with mixed thoughts related to various activities. This habit might take possession of your mind in a subtle way. For example, it may start with your desire to please the boss, who puts a constant pressure on you to do a lot of things. But on this route you may achieve an opposite result. By mixing up your thoughts you can not be productive. And so by trying to please the boss, you disappoint him. More than that, this may hold you back from raising your confidence level and forging your character. How harmful is this habit ? Well, it might determine your success or failure in life. The concept of separating activities, developed in this article will show you how to deal with this challenge.

Many people mistakenly think that if they will deal with a lot of activities at the same time they will achieve more. But very often all they get is just an illusion of doing a lot of things. The key to dealing with this problem is to develop a special skill – the skill of thinking about each activity separately.

Have you ever wondered why people with the same abilities as you are more successful at their job ? You may be surprised to find out that the reason for their success is not the talent, but the ability to separate activities and thoughts related to them. Yes, the ability to stay focused on one activity at a time is crucial for success. The important thing is to not allow other thoughts unrelated to the current activity to penetrate the mind. It’s not an easy thing to do because we are constantly bombarded with various other ideas, thoughts, influences etc.

Why is the mixing up of thoughts related to different activities unproductive ? First of all, by mixing up your thoughts you confuse the issue. The very issue appears to you more complicated than it is in reality. Secondly, confusion triggers worries and worries confuse the situation even more. And thirdly, a person tires faster dealing with a confused and unclear situation. For a tired person the issue seems even more blurred.

Now let’s see how we can grasp the attitude and spirit of separating different activities. Imagine that you meet a bear in the forest. Will you think about other things until you get away from the bear? Will you be trying composing romantic poems in that moment. Quite the opposite: your mind, your emotions will be fully involved in “the activity” of running away. All your thoughts will be related to this one “activity”. And you will not allow even a single thought about anything else until you finish “the job” at hand. This is, obviously, an extreme situation. But you can achieve similar results in separating your thoughts in any other activity.

Let’s take, for instance, the game of playing tennis. If you allow thoughts, not related to the game, to take possession of your mind, your performance will go down dramatically. This is especially noticeable in a tight game between equally skilled opponents. Tennis players are even advised to focus only on the point they are playing and not think about the previous or next point! This advise could be worded as: “Be in the moment. Live the moment. "

The same is true at your work place. The advice here is sound: “Be in the activity. Live the activity”. If you want to be more efficient at your job, you need to apply the skill of separating your thoughts related to different activities. If you lack this skill, don’t get discouraged. It could be developed. It just requires time, discipline and practice. Tennis players work a lot on this skill in order to achieve higher results. If this is important in the game of tennis, it is even more important in the activity, which determines your job promotion.

Have you ever given a public talk and felt that “you were not in the talk” or you were not “living” the talk? If you felt so, than know that this was “a blow” given to you, due to the fact that you did not separate fully your activity from other thoughts. Not being in the talk and not living fully the talk robs you of the joy of connection with inner self and with the audience. And the reverse is true - when you are in the talk and live it, you experience a tremendous joy of self-expression. The same is true about any other creative activity.

We all wish to be reasonable and wise. The skill of separating our activities has a lot to do with this desire. For example, if you stay focused enough time on one issue, you begin to see different facets of it more clearly. It’s similar to the situation when you visit for the first time a town and gradually you begin to discern its main streets, squares etc. If you don’t allow enough time for a focused observation, you will not be able to form a clear picture of the object under observation. The same is true with any complicated problem or project you are undertaking. You shouldn’t panic when faced with a complicated issue. First think: have you given enough time to the issue and have you blocked out any other activities and thoughts? The criteria of giving an issue enough time is determined by the point at which you are able to break down the problem into it’s components, and after that to make the synthesis of it. If you do this you may congratulate yourself with a day spent reasonably.

There is another aspect of the issue – the aspect of your character and personality. How are you going to take responsibility for the job, be fully involved, manifest interest, care for the job and have the inner resolve to finish it, if you mix up other activities? Besides, mixing up your thoughts on different activities is the way of “dissipating” or “losing” your personality.

Let’s now summarize the impact of the approach of separating different activities and see what difference it will make in your life. It will remove the confusion of issues you are dealing with and related worries. It will enable you to connect with enough time to penetrate deep into your problem. You will be in the activity, and you will live the activity. You will raise the efficiency of your work, thus increasing your chances of fully realizing your abilities. You will gain control over your work, projects etc. It will help you to further strengthen your character and personality. And, to some degree, you will be able to shape your future. You will maintain (not lose!) your confidence in the fact that your mind is able to produce ideas, which bring results. You will feel an intellectual and emotional boost, - the joy of self-expression. This joy will make you to feel more in control, enthusiastic and happy.

Thus, the concept of separating activities is indispensable for your success. Stay the course of this attitude and it will not only “save you from the bear” in any of your activities, but it will also carry you to the desired results you dreamt about for a long time.

Big thanks to you Igor! I find your article very useful. Really, I forgot the last time I have read something interesting like that.
Your idea is clear, separating activities and thoughts for increasing the success is an elementary thing which bears in everybody's subconsciousness, but not consciousness. That is why, we don't realize this "elementary thing". Thank you for pointing this out.

Imagine that you work in a Call Center as a manager. The boss tells you to develop a training program for new operators during the next two weeks. Your duty, at the same time, is to listen to the current conversations of the Call Center's operators to ensure the quality of their product presentations. If you try to fulfil your new task by "stealing" time from your first activity, you will end up with underachievement. Or your result wil be a mediocre one. You can not build your success on a series of mediocre results, can you ? You may also ask yourself a sobering question:"On what foundation do I build my success ?" The whole idea of development is ruined, if you don't separate your activities.

But if you focus just on one activity at a time, you may discover your hiden potential and talents. You may surprise even yourself !

I agree, but people don't want to separate their activities because they consider they will have to spend more time on them. But the truth is the contrary. If time is separated for each activity you can know exactly when you are going to finish it and plan further tasks.

today I tried to make my job and not think about anything else. It's true, my job was qualitative and I finished it very fast. It really helps. But I have to work it out as a habit.

That's so true. Unless we make it a habit no real change will follow.

Do you practice this yourself Igor? I wondered if you could share your experience with us.

I realized that when we put books orderly on the shelves, according to their respective field, we easily can retrieve them from their places. This is a simple model. I try to imagine this model each time when I feel a subconscious tendency to mix my thoughts. Also I imagine how difficult it is to find the right book, when they are mixed up in a pile on the floor.

Again, this model works for me when I feel the need to bring my thoughts in order. We need to do this periodically, because we all tend to relapse. But I think that each person might choose his/her own model, which works best for him/her.

I never had my issues and things on their place. This fact can easily be realized even if you took a look at my screen desktop. It's always full of unnecessary or old files which should have been moved to other folders long time ago. But I never manage to do that, motivating that it's not necessary to hasten...

Some people though apparently disorganized, nevertheless have some degree of organization.
For instance, even though the things they deal with are in disorder, they do have some kind of organization, - kind of mental maps, which allow them to find the way to a "lost" piece of information. Mental maps are formed gradually either by the frequent use of things, or by prioratizing a few issues and disregarding others.

So some degree of separation does exist even in this case, but very specific one. If it works for you, then that's all that matters. You probably can tell us more, how things work in your case, can you?

My point was that order from chaos can't appear by itself. It must have been some kind of organization, don't you think so ?

I guess I possess the "mental maps" you are talking about Igor. I can easily deal with some things, regardless of the circumstances. But, I think that's not enough. I feel I can do better and increase my productivity. But, hundreds of other thoughts intrude my mind and don't leave me a chance not to think about them.

It appears that you have rich imagination. This is very good. But this is also the reason why your mind rambles with various thoughts. Then exercising the concentration is the key. I would use simple common sense exercises and would, for sure, avoid any spelling, self-suggetions etc methods.

you mean something like always telling yourself "I can do this, I can do this"
That can work

I mean two things.
The first few minutes before begining to work try to concentrate on the task, on what you should do.
As difficult it might be, try this at the best of your abilities. And then don't worry that your mind will ramble for a while.
Next, try to understand fully the task, which you are doing.

Shortly: 1 - formulate the task and fix your mind on the formulation for a few minutes. 2 - Understand the task.

I would try these two things and record the results to see the difference.

I also noticed that it is much easier to work when your working table is clean. And generally, not only the working table, but the entire room you are working in. This way you will not make any other unneeded moves which could draw the attention away.

In order to focus on the task, for example, if your work is a computer work, you can set up 2 operating systems in your computer (one for personal things and one for work), so that you are not tempted by using any interesting softwares or games.

turning off the phone, either mobile or landline, is also important. Just imagine your friends call you to go out and have some beer with them, would you have the taste for working, in that case? I don't think so

one of the secrets of personal success (which will not anymore be a secrete, because I will reveal it) is to strongly believe in the things you do/wanna do. You can laugh at me, but a real will can move mountains.

this sounds too optimistic. At some point I agree with you, since the will makes us more confident in our powers, but it certainly can't make a lot if circumstances don't facilitate you

To me the best way to go is to be realistic. An optimist sentiment can trick you, and you might end in a big trouble in the end.

an optimistic way of thinking doesn't mean excluding objectiveness.

Everyone, each person on this planet is special for its qualities and capacities, and there are not two the same. Even twins are not the same, they have different characters. So I want to say that personal success depends on each person in part.
