Try Ubuntu. Specifically, the educational version of it, EdUbuntu. Piece of cake to install and it comes with all the tools built-in for FREE. OpenOffice is a magnificent tool (equivalents of excel, word, powerpoint, great database, etc). You can use it as a simple GUI or you can learn the guts of it by learning all the commands for the console. Next step, learn some C or Java. Or better yet, don't do any of that and instead go on hot dates. I think the reward for the latter is more memorable.

Is it true that installing linux will not allow many programs we use in Windows to run? I have a friend on skype who uses linux, he can't use the call options, we can only chat.

It works both ways. Lots of Linux programs not available readily in Windoze and vice-versa.
But with a bit of work you can make it happen.
I haven't used Skype in ages so I don't know what the deal is but I'm sure your friend knows about Wine http://www.winehq.org/ that allows Linux users to use out-of-the-box Windoze programs. But with a bit of hacking, you can make Linux do anything. There is no readily available Skype package for Ubuntu but I got it to work with this link: http://screencasts.ubuntu.com/Skype some time ago. For other version of Linux - there's this link from Skype: http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/ and most Linux/Skype users swear by it.

Actually I use skype from linux Ubuntu and I can use the call function. The only function that is not available in skype on linux is video call.
Steven, Your friend may experience problems because some of his audio devices are not working properly in Linux not because of skype.
