Art and culture of Denmark - hellodear - 08-27-2009

Denmark does not take up much space on a map of the world, and the country has only 5 million inhabitants. But in spite of the limited size, several Danes have made a name for themselves world-wide. These ‘Great Danes’ include writers, physicists, philosophers, athletes, designers, architects, movie directors, politicians, kings etc. Some are better known outside Denmark than others.

Bertel Thorvaldsen
The great demand for Thorvaldsen's works resulted in time in his having a well-run studio workshop with a large number of pupils and assistants. In addition to a large number of busts and statues of famous European personalities, Thorvaldsen executed a number of large monumental tasks, for instance the Alexander Frieze in Rome (1812, Quirinale Palace).

Vilhelm Hammershoei
He is best known for his many interiors portraying simple and sparsely furnished rooms. They are often devoid of human figures, but in many there is an isolated female figure, usually stationary and with her face turned away.

Nicolai Abildgaard
As a painter and architect, Nicolai Abildgaard, 1743-1809, was a leading figure in Danish neo-classicism and early Romanticism. He trained in the Copenhagen Academy of Fine Arts, and during a stay in Rome he made a close study of Classical and Renaissance idiom. Here, he also executed the main work of his youth, Wounded Philoctetes (1774-75, Statens Museum for Kunst).

Denmark’s theatres offer a wealth of opportunity to enjoy the dramatic arts. Tradition and innovation goes hand in hand to create memorable moments of sheer magic.

Danish arts & crafts and Danish design are in a class of their own – and visitors have the chance to see work in progress, either at the studio of a potter in South Zea land, a glass blower in a Jutland market town or at the Royal Copenhagen Welcome Center.
