Italy hardens laws against illegal immigrants - Faw_Peter - 08-03-2009

On July 16 came into force a law that declares illegal immigration criminal offense! The new law stipulates a fine of 5 thousand up to 10 thousand euros for living illegally in the country and extend the period of retention for illegal immigrants from two to six months. The people who host the illegal immigrants can be sentenced up to three years in prison.
How you think..countries should take italian's example and do the same thing?

As far as I know illegal immigration is a "criminal offence" in all the countries of the world, no? Of course I may not really understand what is "criminal" and what is not (with regards the illegal immigrant his/herself) but knowingly harbouring/employing an illegal immigrant must be a criminal offence, no? I agree that illegal immigration is not a good thing for the general populace and I feel that something should be done against it. Sitting behind bars for 3 years may a bit harsh but I doubt that any judge would impose the maximum punishment on anyone. I´m guessing it´s used more as an deterrent than a real life sentence.

I think yes, we should all take Italia´s example but tailor it to local needs, not Italy´s.

yes...but if to analyze this country till now has been very tolerant towards immigrants! or probabily after the events happened in Italy involving illegal immigrants they publicly announced as to scare people! are several reasons for that decision, I believe, from what I read and heard!

I believe the problem is unemployment, financial crisis and the war in Iraq and Somalia. How can we or Italy afford all of these people? We can´t.

Wars and political disagreements make the world a great turn. Politics is becoming more harsh and their chess playing becomes very dangerous. Innocent people suffers. Many events in history are learning us that war is not good. And yet people like were stupid and remain stupid. Money and power foolishly the humanity .

Know what is most interesting ...? all we know this, but in reality does not disturb anyone. Those who don't have money and power, receiving it, becomes like those who have given it, not with anything better.

Yes, unemployment is the problem. But Italy won in that point. Everybody knows that the salary for immigrants is lower then for the citizens. It is a payable labour force Cry

Yes you are right, cheaper workforce, willing to do all kinds of work, and even money from fees for residence permit.
