STRESS CAUSED BY MEETING DEADLINES - euigorwithyou - 08-29-2008

Richard Carlson in his book “Don’t sweat small stuff”, wrote: “Don’t dramatize deadlines. A lot of deadline stress comes not from the deadlines themselves, but instead from the energy wasted thinking about them, wondering whether we’ll meet them, feeling sorry for ourselves and, perhaps most of all, commiserating with others about them.
Working toward your goal without the interference of negative mental energy makes any job more manageable.”
I would like to comment on his wise remarks. My approach to this problem is based on the following suggestion: embrace the principles instead of deadlines. And the principle says: ”Before building a tower calculate the expenses”. The principle like a good wave will pull you to the shore. Stay on it. Calculate carefully what and how long will take to fulfill the goal. And only than set or agree with the deadline. After that, once the deadline is set, don’t wonder whether you will meet it or not, as Dr. Carlson recommends.

When I was a student I had always been afraid of not meeting the deadlines on finishing my works. What I noticed is that I always managed to meet them, but I still felt bad. Why? I don't know, maybe your comments are right, Igor. Maybe I was wasting a lot of energy for allowing the fear going up.

this is, again, all about separating activities. Once you are focused on one activity and not paying attention to others, in order to increase efficiency.

Deadlines are always a headache. What can I say they consume your energy with no matter if you want that or not, that is why it is called WORK

Well, there are works that assume no deadlines. But I do believe deadlines give us an incentive for self-improvement.

Beside that, deadlines also will help us to discipline ourselves into a more responsible person as well! Although, I'm the type of person that hate this deadlines stuff!

discipline depends very little on deadlines. Discipline depends on your temper and will to achieve goals. If it's really strong, you will set a "deadline" in your mind.
