Windows vs Linux - Andrewz - 07-10-2008

What is the best operating system for you - Windows or Linux? Give arguments.

Re: Windows vs Linux - Steven - 07-12-2008

Bill Gates is suddenly not happy about Linux

Re: Windows vs Linux - M.Helen - 07-13-2008

Linux is bad for using softwares like skype, yahoo and other messengers. Personally I am using windows but when I chat to somebody who has Linux we can't arrange a normal discussion because of bugs.

Linux is free, that's his main advantage. It's just that people have to get used with it.

Since windows is the most popular operating system in the world, it is also the one to which the majority of computer viruses are destined. Linux is not so vulnerable to viruses as Windows is.

Re: Windows vs Linux - Terry - 07-20-2008

A good operating system is a system which can be used even by our grandparents. In this sense I would say Linux is teh best. It doesn't give errors.

Re: Windows vs Linux - M.Helen - 07-27-2008

Maybe Linux is better to use. But, the problem is that, Windows penetrated too deep our blood, and now it's like oxygen, we can not live wihtout it.

Re: Windows vs Linux - willyoumind - 07-31-2008

I used both the Windows and Linux, however I still think that the Windows is a little bit better than Linux.

Re: Windows vs Linux - Benn - 07-31-2008

what exactly are the things which made you think so, William?

RE: Windows vs Linux - Akshay_M - 11-03-2020

Well, big question.

Let’s have a list of pros and cons, to simplify:

Windows

Pros:

If it comes pre-installed, the drivers always work.
There are literally thousands more games for windows than linux
MS Office.
It is almost always pre-installed on computers, so there is no need for a linux-like installation.
Superior GUI. I have to face facts, Windows does have a great GUI.
Cons:

Possibly the least secure modern OS out there
There is no way to tell what programs do, since they are proprietary. A program could have control of your camera, and you would never know it.
Convoluted system. It is extremely hard to get anything done on your system, because the back-end (control panel, CMD) is archaic, since no-one uses it.
Huge number of background processes. These are called bloatware, which are unnecessary processes, that clog up you computer, and slow it down.
Terrible command line. Command Prompt is ancient, and PowerShell has a very steep learning curve.
OK, bet you can tell which I’m rooting for.

Linux

Pros:

Security. You can’t install software with one-click. Everything that could potentially wreck your computer requires authentication.
Linux is great about staying up and running, without shutting down, or needing updates. While a Windows computer may need a restart every week or so, linux can stay up for months at a time.
Everything is open-source. Anti-Linux people might say, “If it’s open-source, anyone might put stuff in it!” Exactly. That’s why it’s so secure. Anyone can look at the source code, so everyone can see that user X is writing viruses, or not fixing his errors. If you do make errors, other, more experienced people can help you fix them.
Bloat-free. Remember those back-ground processes? Linux requires only a handful to run, and thus you have scads more RAM for your video player, browser, or what have you.
Options. This is a biggie. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF LINUX! If you don’t like this one, install a new one.
Everything is customizable. This is also a biggie. If you don’t like what’s pre-installed, install something better. If you don’t like the GUI, install a different one (for a user-installed desktop environment, I would go with KDE, or GNOME). With a little work, you can get any linux distro looking like windows, MacOS, or any other flavor of linux.
Fun. Linux is awesome to play with.

Cons:

Hardly any video games. Because so few people use linux, there are few games ported to it.
Unreliable hardware drivers. The most popular distros usually work right out of the box, but some times, you have to work on it.
Slightly less better GUI. GUI’s for linux aren’t as polished as others. This is only barely true, usually it’s false.
That’s all I can think of right now.

Hope this influences you to join the linux crowd.
