The USSR was the empire of lies. While you live within the lie, you just don't call them lies. KGB was among master institutions to feed people with a kind of virtual reality network to mask the truth by multiple sanctimonies. The Soviet system was a total hypocrisy. Putin was educated and internalized within this system. They lied all the time about everything and they were hiding the truth.
I could recall some usual things from my everyday life during that era. When the world was boycotting the Olympic games in 1980 I was just unaware of the reason - I heard nothing of Afghanistan. When I first heard it was the war there I thought it was the propaganda of the imperialistic West. We had a book at home called "On events in Czechoslovakia" (in English) printed in the USSR, and I believed it contained true facts and right interpretations. I learnt that my neighbours' relatives were repressed by Communists and the girl living in front of my house was attending the church in the years of Perestroika and Glasnost only, for it has been too risky to talk of such topics in the previous years. And so on, and so on...Hundreds of examples I could mention just of my personal life which was quite lucky if compared with others.

I'll try to follow your logic: Ossetians fled because Georgians were killing them, and Georgian civilians fled not because Ossetians were killing them, but for fear of revenge only. That is Georgians are bad, Ossetians are good!!!
Next - a patrol boat was sunk because the crew was probably killing Ossetians on the sea or on the beach and Russian govt being fateful to its obligation to save Ossetians from the genocide had to intervene, right?
Now, logically the number of KIA always gets increased either because severely wounded people may die or more KIA may be found later on. How come the Russian losses went down from 74 to 68 and Ossetian losses from 2000 to 1600?! By the way a certain Alexander Bastrykin, head of the prosecutor general’s Investigative Committee, put the figure at 134.
I don't know whether in Putin's Russia anyone can be trusted, but how can these two officials have such different figures? The conclusion - Moscow deliberaty inflated the number of civilian casualties and concocted some stories of mass atrocities so as to provoke ethnic Ossetians against Georgians and justify brutal ethnic cleansing carried out in the region.
As for the Georgian side, the casualties among military servicemen and civilians are announced 370.

You cannot attack all the countries with Russian people. It is not called policy but aggression.
