Re: Languages

I think the English also generally suck at languages  The main problem is that most people speak English, so there is little incentive to learn another language. If you travel, people always want to practice their English with you! For me, I did a course by distance learning which took my knowl...

Re: Hard work means happiness?

I agree with Olivia. You often see women become clinically depressed if they give up work to look after their family. People are often prone to depression and other mental conditions when they retire, or if they are long-term unemployed. I know people who retired or had an old-fashioned husband, and...

Re: Lond term products

I agree, it isn't good to eat.

The most common preservatives are sugar and salt. It is now thought by many people in the UK that this is behind our obesity and heart disease epidemics. Of course, scientific research (sponsored by the sugar industry) claims otherwise

Re: Copenhagen Climate Summit

This is a publicity stunt for Gordon Brown, desperate to be recognised as a world statesman - it's the same game Tony Blair used to play (and he had a lucrative career lecturing at foreign universities once his career as prime minister ended). Britain is still in recession while France and Germany a...

Re: Facts about winter solstice

Of course, the solstice was celebrated by pagans as Yule. Even today there are large numbers of neo-Pagans and -Heathens who celebrate the solstice. Many Christmas traditions, like the Yule log, wassailing, and bringing greenery into the house, are based on Pagan traditions. Some people even beleive...

Re: The Ultimate Christmas Message

This is very interesting shammi - I have never heard of anyone fasting before Christmas. Normally people eat huge amounts around Christmas! What denomination are you? It is true that people could be more socially aware instead of concentrating on their family and friends. I heard that suicide rates ...

Re: The Miracles of Christ

Remember that these miracles have never been believed by everyone ;-) Only 1/3 of the world's population are Christian, and many of those assume that the miracles were metaphoric. :-) Martin, remember the miracles performed by Mother Earth in the days of old. We should understand that all that thing...

Re: Interesting for tourists (traditions and laws)

Hey, Steven, Suicide is no longer a hard crime in the UK :-) but it is true that once you could be sent to prison if you survived a suicide attempt  my mother tells me that, until fairly recently, a lot of nurses would take a dim view of suicide patients in hospitals (many of the senior nurse...

Re: Big, fat women

I go to a slimming club where I am surrounded by women like this. Believe me, they want to change! But they have been told so many lies by food manufacturers and dieting "experts" - everything they try makes the situation worse :nonnon Then they start to believe that they cannot change... ...

Re: Women and diets! Good or bad?

Martin, it is so much more complicated than that! Yes, you will lose weight if you reduce the number of calories you consume. But if you do not get the correct nutrition, you will become very ill and your body will resist you! In addition, if you eat too few calories, you will not actually lose any ...

Re: Women and diets! Good or bad?

My experience is that you cannot manage your weight through exercise alone: in fact, the more you exercise, the more hungry you become! Exercise is an important and beneficial part of any weight loss plan, but it is just one part. However, many of the diets you see are very dangerous. They are often...

Re: EU president

Who are you talking about, Lorry? Blair? Blair has not been made president. Since Sept 11, personal freedom has been greatly reduced in the UK, and the Anti-Terror Laws that were introduced are a step backwards for democracy :nonnon Iraq did not "kick up their heels" - Iraq had nothing to ...

Re: Why a postgraduated student may not be a specialist?

You are right to be proud! But being a Graduate does NOT make you a Specialist. ;-) Most large companies will run a Graduate Trainee Scheme, lasting 2 - 4 years. During this period you learn many of the practical skills that were not taught at university. Most graduates do not have the assertiveness...

Re: Women discrimination

Re: men vs women

Re: Most exotic travels

Maybe Belarus could be an exotic place? for some people of course... Re: The older you get, the more difficult is to love

It's so true! Young men are beasts - they think it is very clever to sleep around and hurt people, but what they achieve is to make women bitter and cautious. Romance is a way for men to get you into bed - once you understand this, romance is dead. When I was a little girl, I dreamed that one day a ...

Laurentine and Lorry - thank you for your advice, but I cannot agree with you! Every time I treat a guy well and try to tell him that I love him, he just takes advantage of me. Lorry, what happens when other people do not accept your body? What happens when you cannot fulfill society's expectations for your gender? Re: What is more important: career or family

For me, there is no choice. I couldn't bear to have a child that I couldn't look after. I need to earn a regular wage which will cover rent, bills, food and childcare costs (which are as much as the rent!) Of course, it would be nice to work flexible hours, and put the child to bed sometimes ;-) Of ...
