Any advices on how to choose a high quality, reliable vacuum cleaner?
What is better HEPA filtering or water filtering? I'm interested in personal experiences.
Also what is better bagless vacuums or vacuums with bags?
At the moment am thinking of Miele or Bosch... are there any other brands that are worth looking at?

I have a HEPA vacuum cleaner, a very expensive one. Paid 150 euros. Should tell you am really satisfied and need nothing. Its price really proved its quality. Brand - Dyson.

Also, I heard of a German brand - Thomas. Very popular in western Europe. As for whether to choose a bagless vacuum cleaner or vacuums with bags, it depends on the purpose you want it to be used.

Terry 150 euro for a vacuum cleaner is not expensive.
A miele vacuum cleaner can cost more than 1000 euro and the cheapest model is about 300 euro.

Now about choosing between bosh and miele. I know that both companies have a good reputation and both are German companies. Miele is a more expensive brand - but it has a reputation that deserves it.
Once a miele sales man shocked me by showing me how tough the miele vacuums are - he literally jumped with both of his legs on the vacuum, then he took it by the cord and started rotating around his head.
This was his answer to why this vacuum is so expensive He also told me that these vacuums are so tough because they are made from materials that are used in aeronautics. I don't know how true is this though...

well Peter, it's simple enough. Just buy one of these and you'll never be bothered by such problems as reparations. I believe you have many other interesting things to do rather than seeking someone who can do that for you. Besides, you'll get at least 5 years warranty for Miele vacuum cleaner. It's almost unbreakable.

For carpets, you need the vacuum cleaner that have enought suction power. If you have a long hair, you need a vacuum that has a stainless steel brush roller with ball bearings. Chose a bag model to keep dust out of the air. Test the power switch , height level controller and the others controls , and make sure that they are easy to use. Check how often the replacement of details should occur and how much it will cost you.

Of course, both Miele and Dyson are very expensive vacuums. It just depends on how much you want to pay.

I don't think I would go with water filtration. Most of the units that offer this seem to be expensive and bulky. If you have allergies or asthma I believe a HEPA filter will do just fine. The thing to look out for here is that the vacuum has a "sealed system". If the vacuum isn't sealed then dust and debris can bypass the filter. A few machines out there do offer sealed systems - like Miele or Sebo (and some others). Miele and Sebo are very good vacuums btw as you can see on the vacuum brand scroring chart at http://vacuum-cleaner-ratings.com/ . Btw a Miele Canister can go for as low as 150 euros.

With respect to bagged or bagless, in my experience this really comes down to personal preference. I've used bagged machines all my life and I like them - no fuss and no mess. But I have several friends that really like the bagless approach whereby you do not have to purchase (and throw away) bags. In today's more environmentally conscious world some people like bagless vacuums with washable filters (Dyson do this fairly well).

With respect to which is better - Miele or Bosch - I would go with Miele. I've never had a Bosch but they are not particularly highly rated by consumers online, especially comparied to a Miele vacuum. You may also want to consider some other highly rated machines like the Dyson DC25, or the Hoover UH30010COM. With Miele you may want to look at the S2 or S4 series. Each series has a number of different vacuums (with different options and attachments) and these will typically cater to the kind of vacuuming you intend to do (as in mostly hardwood floors, mostly carpet (high lile, low pile?) or both.

Having a house full of kids means I'm going to be cleaning just about every day. With my kids it's always a challenge. They play outside a lot so I'm constantly having to vacuum up dirt and tiny rocks. I've really been wanting to invest in a new vacuum for a while. I've been thinking about checking out Miele Vacuum Cleaners. The one I've had for a while is just old and I really need to get with the times. My concern is just how much can this thing really handle. The older my boys get the more of a mess I know I'm going to have to clean.
