Is it easy to get a job in Greece?

Postby Wulf » 27 Jan 2011, 11:05

I wanted to know how easy is it to get a job in Greece for a native English speaker (I am American). My future husband is Greek and we will move to the country in September.

I have a "future Greek husband as well," and he lives in Greece right now. I am also American. I have a job already there, which is where I met him in the first place. However, if you don't have a visa or are not married to a Greek man, it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to get a legal visa. you could always work under the table, but you would have to worry about you overstaying your visa.

It is very hard to find work or to get sponsored in Greece by a company because they must pay a lot of money..and they would rather employ their own. so unless you have connections in companies already, it does not matter what your skills are or education level. it's very hard.

Good luck though! My suggestion is get married to the guy, get a work visa and go get a job at a bar (oh, and learn Greek too...I am working on that..)

Depends of your profession.

For example, as an accountant or a mathematician you will probably face some problems.IF you profession is not so in demand, you can still find a good job

A good site for job offers is
http://www.kariera.gr/GR/Default.aspx

But its in Greek.
If someone can help you write your CV in English will be great. Its really helpfull website and almost all the big companies are advertising there.

Good luck

No. The only SUPER EASY chance to get a job and a well paid one, is to be an English teacher, especially if you ll offer private lessons.
As an American you will be first at the list. I know because my daughter (7-8y) is having private lessons with a native english speaker.
But this option will mean that you have to prepare yourself for a year or so. Maybe you need to have some kind of certifications. If you really want to be successeful you have to have studied something and not be just a high school graduate.
Greek is not indispensable in Greece but it is a good to start learning, without getting anxious.

Another option, very difficult with the crisis, is to work at an import export department of an industry...

You realise that the financial crisis is making job-finding difficult everywhere.
As a native English-speaker you can teach English, or even babysit in the morning (some people want their children to stay with an english-speaking person to learn English from a young age).
For other types of jobs, it all depends on your qualifications. An English-speaking friend of mine is an excellent accountant, so he works in a big international company. But he hd great qualifications. Another guy I know who is Spanish-speaking is an architect, so he works in an architectural office. But if you want a job liek in a shop or supermarket etc., you have to learn some to speak Greek.
