Undiscovered Oil Reserves In The Arctic Circle

Undiscovered oil reserves in the Arctic Circle

Postby M.Helen » 03 Dec 2009, 20:40

A new study in this area suggests that in the Arctic Circle would find about one quarter of global reserves yet undiscovered oil and gas. U.S. Agency of geological prospecting considers that in the region would find a good part of the reserves of oil and gas available technical from around the world - would be about 13 percent of still undiscovered oil reserves and 30 percent of the gas.

The study shows that one third of that oil would be found close to Alaska, while most of the gas is in the region held by Russia. For the most part, the reserve is below the water. U.S. Agency considers that in the area would find so much oil that could provide the necessary quantity of oil for three years.

Russia, Canada, Denmark, Norway and the United States dispute their generous reserve area, which now, with melting ice, become more accessible. But environmentalists warn that exploitation of oil and gas reserves in the region will have a disastrous effect on living creatures from the North Pole.

More than 70 percent of the undiscovered oil resources is assessed to occur in five provinces: Amerasia Basin, Arctic Alaska, East Greenland Rift Basins, East Barents Basins, West Greenland-East Canada. It is estimated that approximately 84 percent of the undiscovered oil and gas locates offshore. The total mean undiscovered oil and gas resources of the Arctic area are estimated to be roughly 90 billion barrels of oil.

As global warming causes the polar icecaps to recede, potentially oil-rich seabeds are being uncovered beneath the Arctic Circle in the suddenly navigable territory. The area has long been thought to hold substantial reserves: Some say up to 25% of the world's undiscovered oil and natural gas may lie below the thawing ice.
