Poland indeed encounters shortage of manpower. It all began as far back as 2004, when Poland joined the European Union family. The economic condition was so poor, that even during the first several months thousands of Polish people left for Western Europe. They found UK to be most prospective in the matter of salary, so it took the biggest hit.

Now they have the "opportunity" to return to their motherland. UK neither want nor need immigrant work power, as there's an essential surplus of it. Poles, time to build your own country.

This problem is very topical for Poland. It's all about Euro 2012, which were decided to be carried on in Poland. Most Polish construction workers left the country, but now it really needs them as there's a lot of work to do with stadiums, hotels etc.

so why don't those workers come back home if they have the opportunity to work and earn money in their country. I don't think there's big difference between salaries. Construction workers are paid well if they're hard-working indeed.

UK simply needs to control immigrants. I know it already did, but it's late, as the country is already overwhelemed with Eastern migrant workers. It should have introduced an yearly limite quote for workers, so UK people are not deprived of the possibility to work home.

It's not too serious from your part. I mean it sounds nice and all, but imagine everybody were resting the way you are, who then would raise the future? Maybe this is one of the reason of your economic instability.

It would be a shame for British people to work in Eastern European countries. I doubt any sector in Poland is more developed than in UK. Plus, Poland is among the first countries that received the biggest hit from the economic crisis, so what are the jobs you're talking about? Probably paid with coins...

I am not so sure. The UK is a wealthy country, but we are so miserable! Everyone is obsessed with buying a house and looking wealthy, and they assume we have the best lifestyle in Europe because they don't know any better (actually, I'm told that most of Scandinavia consider us to be a bit poor and backwards ). I know people who do nothing but work, drink and watch football on TV I even saw a report on the TV where families in south London were going without food to buy designer clothes for their children?!?!?! I cannot talk politics or economics with most of my colleagues in the UK, like we do on this forum: a frightening number of young people have no idea about history or current affairs. And we are having real problems with crime...

People tell me that there is a sense of community and a good quality of life in Eastern Europe. I certainly feel very safe in Berlin and Ljubljana (I wouldn't dare go out in the evening by myself in most UK cities!) I think that British people could learn a lot by travelling a little (with an open mind: not those awful stag parties in Ibiza and Prague!), and perhaps appreciate what we have here.

I am surprised to hear your pesimistic opinion about the UK. Miserable is not exactly the word for this country. You see, the state of things all over the world is much worser than in UK. I feel sorry that your mates don't like politics/economy. But probably they don't need it for full happiness, as against you, I believe. Families who buy brand clothes for their children find happiness in wealthy appearance... I can't say it's great, but this is what they like.

Ah, it's not just my mates: there's been a pretty big failing of the education system amoung younger people. And fashion probably plays a part - people just don't aspire to being intelligent.

When I say miserable... I mean that people are unhappy. I agree that we are wealthier than most countries. We are wealthier than when I was a child, but people are more unhappy and socialise less. If someone invites you to their house, it will usually be to show off their £1000 Barbeque set or 52" Plasma TV, and then lecture you on why you must buy a house too Then they complain that they never have enough money!

Perhaps other places are worse - but I think it would be educational to find out. At least, being unemployed will be much nicer in a warm southern country...

However, we're deviating a bit. The bottom line is that there are over 2 million unemployed in the UK, and that figure is rising every day. For someone who has a house and a family, they will get enough benefits for it to be worth staying in the UK. But for other people, it makes sense to look for work elsewhere.

I know that some British industries (notably the car manufacturing industry) have relocated to central and eastern Europe.

I was joking a little when I started this post - I think it will be very interesting to see how British people cope with this situation

You appear to be wrong. Once I saw the list of the countries ranked according to their perception of happiness. The happiest countries were not the wealthiest. If I find the list, I'll publish the link or the whole article.
